I know something about economics, and usually when something is cheap to produce, competition brings the price down eventually. But blood glucose test strips, which are used in little meters to test one’s blood sugar, are between $ 30 cents and .00 for each strip. Yet (I believe) the cost to make them is probably a couple cents.

Its the old "give em the razor but charge em for the blades" thing. Most companies will give you a meter for free because they know that they you can only purchase their strips to work in it and that if you have diabetes and are insulin dependent, you absolutely must have the strips. An insulin dependent diabetic will usually test before and after every meal so there are a minimum of 6 strips a day. Average cost $0.70 each meaning over $1500 in sales each year. suddenly you can see why they give away $75 meters.
You hit the nail on the head. Corporate price gouging. They all work on the same principal yet different companies charge the same prices. So one would suppose that patents aren’t the reason for high prices. And a captive market also help.I for one refuse to test. I keep my G/L to almost normal, my hba1c is 5.6.
Pricing works the same as oil industry. If you drill it, refine it, and sell it, you mean to tell me that you can’t sell cheaper than so called competitors.I don’t let the get me to bad. I bought a 100 cc honda motor bike, it cost me $2 a week for gas.If americans would stick together and boycott just one industry this price fixing would come down.A star for you!
Diabetes is a very profitable disease. Not only are we stuck using these strips, but they also know insurance companies are stuck paying for the lion’s share of the cost. The generic/store brand meters are somewhat less like you say. These companies finance their businesses with the cost of these strips, and they also use some of the proceeds for R&D.
I currently work for one of the companies that makes the glucose meters and test strips. The reason the strips cost so much is so they can pay the salary of me and all the other scientists, engineers, marketing, and other employees that it takes to make the strips/meters. I know that the strips seem simple, but it takes a remarkable amount of science give you a accurate clinical test in something as small as a cell phone. Believe me, we just want you to have accurate results so you can live you life as normal as possible.
Also, if it helps, the glucose meter itself costs at least $75 USD to make and you can usually get that for free.
It is called robbing us poor diabetic, who depends on those test strips to help us control our blood glucose. They are making more than a profit, they are making a killing.
Sorry, didn’t mean to be so negative, but it is the truth.
