How can you tell if you're diabetic?

I’m about 15 lb. overweight for my height, and I am worried I might be diabetic. My Dad has type 2 diabetes, so I’m really freaked out. Here are the symptoms I’ve experienced:

1. Not getting full no matter how much I eat–But this has changed in the past couple of weeks and now I have very little appetite.

2. Bad vision–I never needed glasses before in my life (I am 24), but last summer I needed glasses. Of course, this could also be explained by the fact that bad vision runs in my family.

3. Fatigue.

I know that symptoms 1 and 2 may be explained by the fact that I only just graduated from grad school and I’ve been under a lot of stress lately, but I am worried. I don’t have enough money to go to the doctor for testing. Where can I find diabetic testing strips, and do I need a prescription to get them?
I also have problems with my gums bleeding, but I’ve had that problem pretty much all my life due to not flossing regularly (I do it about 3-5x a week now and I know I need to do better).

Diabetes symptoms seem so harmless, they often often go unnoticed.

Early detection of diabetes symptoms and beginning treatment as soon as possible can decrease the possibilities of developing dangerous complications due to diabetes.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes often develop over a short period of time. In type 2 diabetes, symptoms develop more slowly, and some persons never have any symptoms of the disease. If you are regularly having any of these signs and symptoms, you should tell your doctor.

Common warning signs that can indicate a risk of developing diabetes:

    frequent urination
    excessive thirst
    extreme hunger
    unusual weight loss
    increased fatigue
    irritability
    blurry vision
I would go get that checked out.

The symptoms of diabetes vary from person to person, and many go unnoticed. People can have type 2 diabetes for years before they are diagnosed but it’s being picked up more often now, with the use of the A1C blood test.

While you may not have the usual symptoms, you could be diabetic, so you should see your doctor to be sure one way or the other.

Sometimes pharmacies will have a diabetes info day, where they offer all kinds of info, and in some cases, on-the-spot testing. You might want to inquire to see if any in your area offer this.

You can buy strips at any pharmacy without a script. You will pay big bucks for them though. You get the meter for free when you buy strips so that’s not a problem. If you have a script or insurance, you can get a break on the price. Worth checking out.

Bleeding gums isn’t related, so don’t worry.

You can find testing supplies at any drug store. You can ask because some drug store have a tester and strips and may check it for you at no charge. If your Dad lives close you could have him test you too.
